Description
The Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’ is a popular, self-heading hybrid houseplant known for its large, glossy leaves that emerge coppery-red and mature to a deep, dark green. Because it grows upright in a bushy pattern, it is self-supporting and doesn’t require a trellis or moss pole.
Care Guide
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Protect it from direct sun, which can easily scorch its leaves.
- Soil: Plant in a well-draining, chunky mix (e.g., equal parts indoor potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark).
- Water: Water when the top 50% to 1 inch of the soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Temperature & Humidity: Prefers warm tropical conditions between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C) and thrives in humidity above 50%.
- Toxicity: Like all philodendrons, the Rojo Congo is toxic to pets and humans if ingested.
Common Issues
- Brown or crispy edges: Usually a sign of dry air or underwatering. Consider using a pebble tray or a humidifier.
- Yellow leaves: Can indicate overwatering or insufficient light.
- Leggy growth: Often happens when the plant isn’t receiving enough light.
