Description
Syngonium podophyllum ‘Red Plum Allusion’ (often referred to simply as ‘Plum Allusion’) is a striking, low-maintenance tropical houseplant. It features compact, spade-shaped leaves that emerge a dark, metallic plum or burgundy and fade to a dusty grayish-green as they mature, all tied together by soft pink veins.
Key Care Requirements
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. It will tolerate low-light or office fluorescent lighting, but the vivid plum colors will be much deeper with adequate brightness. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
- Soil: Plant in a well-draining aroid mix containing materials like perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir.
- Watering: Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly and ensure all excess water drains away to avoid root rot.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (55%–65%), making it an excellent addition to bathrooms or well-lit kitchens.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer).
- Toxicity: Keep out of reach of pets and small children, as the plant’s sap is toxic and can cause mild skin or oral irritation if ingested.
