Description
The Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ is a striking, low-maintenance tropical houseplant known for its dramatic foliage. Its broad, glossy leaves unfurl in shades of bronze and deep burgundy, eventually maturing to a rich, almost black-green. Unlike vining types, it has an upright, “self-heading” habit that requires no climbing support.
Care Guide
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to bring out its deepest colors. Protect it from harsh, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out completely before watering again. They prefer well-draining soil and are highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered.
- Temperature & Humidity: Prefers warm, consistent indoor temperatures (18°C – 27°C) and moderate to high humidity. Keep it away from drafty vents or air conditioning units.
- Toxicity: Note that all parts of the philodendron are toxic to humans and pets if ingested, and the sap can cause skin irritation.
